Test format

IELTS offered as paper-based test has two modules – Academic and General Training. The Academic test is for those who want to study at a under graduate, graduate or post graduate level. The General Training test is for those who want to migrate to an English-speaking country, work or enroll for various training programs.

IELTS has four parts – Listening (30 mins/ 40 questions), Reading (60 mins/ 40 questions), Writing (60 mins/ 2 topics) and Speaking (11–14 minutes). The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking tests but Reading and Writing tests differ depending on the module chosen. The Listening, Reading and Writing tests are done in one sitting without a break. The Speaking test may be on the same day or up to seven days before or after the other tests.

Results are reported as band scores on a scale from 1 (the lowest) to 9 (the highest). 1 means the candidate is a non-user and 9 is for an expert user of the language.

Candidates are scored for each part – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The results from all the four parts then give an Overall Band Score. Scores for IELTS are valid for 2 years.
