Why Do We Need to Take Career Counselling?

Choosing the right career for students has rarely been a simple decision. With vast career options available, decision of pursuing one specific career can turn the decision from inspiring to overwhelming.
With the changes happening in the world and new career opportunities coming up, it has become a necessity for students and parents to be updated and have all the information before deciding on a career. Though most of the students and parents have access to information; identifying the authentic and credible information is important and hence there is requirement of professional guidance to plan their future.
Firstly, you need understand what is career counselling? Why do you need career counselling? When to start and how to start?
So, let’s start with What is Career Counselling?
Career Counselling is a type of guidance provided by counsellors to students & working professionals about their work changes, life and learning. It includes guidance in stream selection in school and subjects, exploring careers in that field, making the right choice knowing about the pros and cons, managing the changes and development and dealing with the issues related to it.
Why do we need Career Counselling?
Career Counselling experts can help improve your current and future decisions by analyzing your interest, aptitude and personality through which you can identify what suits you best. They guide you with the best options available by making a career pathway which will not only make you more organized as a person but help build a career for yourself.
It is usually misunderstood that career counselling is just a trend and should not be opted if you already know what you plan to do ahead. Even if you have decided what’s your next step it is important that you discuss it with a career counsellor as it is not a trend but need of the hour. For instance, you are good in Physics, Chemistry and Biology and plan a career in Data Science or can say in Fashion Designing, but that’s not enough. A career counselling will take a lot of things in consideration before suggesting what’s best for you, like what is the eligibility or related fields; the exact admission procedure or even if this is your field of interest but do you have the aptitude for it? In reality there is much more to it than just relying on “I’m good in Physics, Chemistry and Biology”. Confirmation of a career decision is also an important aspect that requires professional guidance.
Also, many parents think that they have reached where they wanted to be without any guidance from a counsellor, so their child also can go with the same. True, but one need to understand that times are changing, the competition and the options are ever increasing. If you are not satisfied with what you do as it will lead to lack of engagement, poor performance at work and career stagnation. So, set a goal and work towards it by connecting with a counsellor for professional guidance, planning your career map and getting all the information needed.
When to start and how?
Before you start with career counselling students should undergo psychometric assessment also known as Aptitude Test will help you make an informed career decision.
The test will assess student’s potential through their Aptitude, Intelligence and Personality. This test should be taken at the age of 14.5 or after but preferably opted after completed 10th grade. After the test which is followed by a career counselling session with parent/s, recommendations will be given to facilitate their career choices or decision.
Now as it’s clear why do you need to take career counselling and all other questions related to it, please make sure you consult a counsellor to get all the information needed and plan your career with guidance.
