Why Study In Singapore?

Singapore is growing as a popular destination to study among the international students. Job opportunities are definitely available for international students in Singapore and most students continue to stay and work after they complete their courses. Singapore is becoming an increasingly popular destination for Indian professionals too as there is increasing demand for overseas labour from the financial services and banking industries.
The cost of living and tuitions fees in Singapore are lower as compared to that in the UK or US.

Education system In Singapore

Singaporean Education System has both local and foreign universities and institutions which offer world recognized courses to students. The main language of instruction is English; Singapore’s education system has been described as “worlds-leading” education system.

  • Diploma & Vocational Education Institutes
  • Singapore Universities

Institutes in Singapore usually fall under two broad categories:

  • Private Schools
  • Public Schools

Living & Studying In Singapore

Living conditions in Singapore are among the highest in Asia, compared to countries like UK or US. The cost of living too is relatively low. Basic items like food and clothing are very reasonable. It is safe and the economy is stable, providing many opportunities for graduates. Students should make prior arrangements for accommodation before arrival in Singapore.

Working & Studying In Singapore

Working while you study

Foreign students are not allowed to engage in any form of employment in Singapore, whether during term time or vacation time, unless they are studying at government universities. The students studying at these universities are allowed to work part time- 16 hrs a week.

Working Post Studies

After completion of the course, the students are allowed to stay in Singapore for 1 month on Social Visit Pass. Employment pass is required to work in Singapore; the employer applies for the same on behalf of the employee.

Application for Study in Singapore

Singapore Visa Application procedure for universities include submitting your application to the institution, accepting a Letter of Offer and applying for student visa. International students can apply for public universities in Singapore, the Foreign University campuses or Private Education Organizations (PEOs).

Singaporean Application Procedure has below Entry Requirement

Diploma

  • A proven record of academic achievements up to Upper Secondary or Senior High School Certificate or GCE O-Levels.
  • TOEFL / IELTS scores

Bachelors Degree courses

  • Minimum entry qualifications for undergraduate courses in polytechnic / University are 10th / 12th with a good score.
  • TOEFL / IELTS scores

Post – Graduate Courses (expansion option)

  • A bachelor’s degree with good score
  • TOEFL / IELTS

Student Visa For Studying In Singapore

Any international student wishing to study full-time in Singapore is required to apply for a student visa. The student visa in Singapore is called as Student Pass.

Procedures for applying for a Student Pass

New applications for a Student Pass must be submitted at least one month and not more than 2 months prior to the commencement of the course.

Applications must be submitted through the Student’s Pass On-Line Application & Registration (SOLAR) system which is accessible through Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA).

List of Documents required to apply for the Students Pass (expansion option)

  • Valid passport
  • Valid travel documents including an onward or return ticket
  • Sufficient funds to last for the intended period of stay in Singapore
  • Two passport-size photos
  • Offer letter from college/university in Singapore
  • Completed application forms
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate if passing through or coming from an endemic zone within 6 days of arriving in Singapore
  • Local sponsor’s ID card, with photocopy, except for those in Institutes of Higher Learning Singapore
  • Birth certificate
  • About 10 certified copies of highest educational certificates and results

Education Cost & Scholarships In Singapore

The average cost of study for an international student annually would be in the range of S$ 24,000 – S$ 40,000(for an undergraduate degree in the Private Institutions and S$ 18,000 – S$ 30,000 (for a masters degree in Private Institutions)

The tuition fees for an undergraduate degree in Public Universities would be approx S$ 45,000 – S$ 95,000 (for a professional course) and the tuition fees for a Post graduate degree would be approx S$ 16,000 – S$ 25,000

International students in Singapore spend on average about S$750 to S$2,000 a month on living expenses. Both on campus and off campus accommodation options are available

Scholarships

Singapore offers both government and university scholarships and fellowships to students.

Private Scholarships

The Singapore Millennium Foundation : Scholarships are offered to post-graduate and post-doctoral students engaged in the field of research. The Foundation offers scholarship to students on their good academic record as well as their research work. Scholarships may be up to $60,000 per year for post-doctoral researchers.

Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarships : Eligible candidates should have excellent academic record in their respective field and international pursuit.

Scholarship for Engineers

Scholarship is offered to engineering students who want to pursue their higher studies in the country. The eligible candidates must possess excellent academic record in their major and be able to offer supporting evidence as to why a program of study in Singapore would add value to their career. Candidates must be enrolled in the National University of Singapore or Nanyang Technology University.
