Education System In Canada

The Canadian Education System consists of both publicly funded and private schools. There is no central education system in Canada. Majority of Canadian universities are largely publicly funded due to which they are able to offer consistently high quality education at lower tuition rates for international students as compared to other countries. Universities here offer a broad range of courses and degrees from undergraduate to doctorate. All overseas students are required to obtain a Study Permit i.e. a Student Visa for going to Canada for studies.

Types of Degree / Certification

Certificate: awarded upon successful completion of a program which is usually of one year

Diploma: awarded on the basis of one or two years of successful study

Advanced Diploma: 3 year program which may lead to Bachelor’s Degree

Bachelors Degree: awarded by Universities/ University Colleges/ Community Colleges after four years of full-time study

Post Graduate Diplomas / Certificates: It leads to a Master’s Degree. These programs have work terms which provide full-time opportunities to gain practical experience along with theoretical studies.

Masters Degree: awarded after successful completion of course which is usually of 2 years

Doctorate or PhD: generally requires 4 to 7 to complete

Living & Studying In Canada

Living and studying in Canada can be a great experience for international students. Students are able to achieve a quality education at an affordable cost of living and tuition fees for international students are generally lower than in other countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom.

Working & Studying In Canada

Only Canada offers this unique opportunity to international students wherein a student graduating from a program of 2 years or more is eligible for a 3 year work permit after graduation with no restrictions on the types of employment and no requirement for a job offer.
Foreign students, while pursuing their studies, are allowed to work for the first 6 months on-campus and thereafter off-campus, depending upon university to university. Students do tend to work on campus after the first two years of their undergraduate course. The graduate students are allowed to work part time on-campus during their academic period and full time during the vacation.
Students can work upto 20 hours per week during their studies and 40 hours per week during vacation. The can take up casual or volunteer work.

Application for Study in Canada

Application Process

The Canadian Application Procedure is more or less the same for international students as their Canadian and US counterparts. However, if a student has not been studying the majority of their coursework in English for more than a year, they will need to provide a TOEFL or IELTS document. It is also not a requirement for students to submit the SAT or ACT scores for undergraduate studies, but is optional if the student feels it strengthens their application.

Masters Studies

  • A good score in Bachelors degree
  • Postgraduate certificate or Diploma
  • IELTS (7 – 7.5)/TOEFL (90 and above)

Student Visa For Studying In Canada

The student visa in Canada is most commonly known as Study Permit. All international students are required to obtain a Student Visa before going to Canada for studies. Students must also meet the requirements of the Canadian Immigration Act and Regulations. Students should log on to official Canadian visa site and check for the updated requirements and visa processing fees and do the needful.

Living Cost

Average cost of living for a period of one year in Canada is around CAD $10,000- 22000 per year and CAD $850-1000 per month. This amount includes food, accommodation, transportation, medical insurance, books, clothing and sundries.

  • College: CAD $9,500 – CAD $12,000 (per year)
  • University Transfer Program (UTP): CAD $9,500 – CAD $12,000 (per year)
  • University Foundations Program: CAD $9,500 – CAD $11,000 (per year)
  • University: CAD $15,000 – CAD $18,000 (per year)
  • English Preparation(ESL) – CAD$900 – CAD $1,370 (per month)


There are plenty of scholarships in Canada that are offered to students from all over the world. Merit based assistance is awarded in many forms, like tuition waivers, assistantships, or fellowships. It also depends on the student’s performance at the university during the tenure of his/her course. A student needs to send a separate application for the scholarship complete with details of student’s financial status.
