What is Biotechnology?

Biotechnology is the use of cells and biological molecules to solve problems or make useful products. From developing new varieties of seeds to improving livestock breeds and from creating pesticides to improving extraction of juices from fruits by rupturing cells, biotechnology finds a wide range of applications. Its application varies from agriculture to industry – food, pharmaceutical, chemical, bio-products, textiles, medicine, nutrition, environmental conservation, animal sciences etc. Biotechnology applications exist across health, Agriculture, food processing, genetic engineering, Health care medicine, Industrial research and development.

The area where biotechnology has grown in India includes Agricultural Biotechnology, Animal Husbandry, Bioinformatics, Bio fertilizers and Dairy development. Growth has also been seen in the area of Bio-resource Development, Plant Biology, Marine Biotechnology, Microbiology, Genetic research.
